Who we are

Abayam Women was formed as a sub-group of Abayam in August 2020, and has members in UK, Australia and Sri Lanka. Our core values are:

  1. To support the health and education of women, so that they in turn can provide for their children and elders.
  2. To promote health education of women as a means of disease prevention (for example, cancer and infectious diseases).
  3. To support the most disadvantaged, for example the poorest and those most affected by war and natural disasters.
  4. To support girls to have the same educational opportunities as boys, and for all children to grow up in a safe environment and achieve their full potential.

Abayam Women supports schools in Northern Province (Vinayagapuram, near Mallavi) and Eastern Province (Palchenai main school and pre-school, Vakarai region). As part of Abayam’s mental health project, Abayam Women runs a schools’ mental health project, employing an experienced local schools’ counsellor to deliver mental health training in schools and to parents, using a training video scripted by a GP and schoolteacher and acted by local actors. Abayam Women also contributes to Abayam’s Pregnancy Packs projects, which provides the most deprived women with basic supplies for her and her baby for the delivery and afterwards.
