Education – Eastern Province

Panankamam Moonrumurippu GTM School for children aged 7-10 years old, has 34 students, 3 teachers and 1 principal.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Repair the printer donated by us.

We have been helping 33 students and 5 teachers at Iyankaran Primary School for a number of years.

We have so far, been aiding in resource allocation, providing exercise books and examination papers.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Provide a school sign-board.
2. Regularly, providing exercise books.
3. Provide dental care support
4. Pay the school fees for students standing at Rs 600 per student per term.
5. Allocate a key board
6. Provide extra food for scholarship students.

During our visit to Elakkanthai GTM Vidyalayam, we met the principals, teachers (iuncluding Araneri teachers), pupils and their parents.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Install a gate for the school.
2. Fund their sports day.
3. Conduct educational tours for pupils, teachers and parents.
4. Providing exercise books as and when required.
5. Construct a partition soft wall for a classroom to be divided into 2 classrooms.
6. Install a water fountain.
7. Fun another teacher for extra classes i.e. a local A/L Student.

At Mallaimunthal Mallaimahal Vidayalayam, there 5 teachers educating 64 students.

We have been providing food/biscuits for evening classes and the pre-school which has significantly increased the attendance to 94%.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Extend our support across the areas including
2. Regularly supplying exercise books, scholarship books for grades 4 and 5.
3. Providing scholarship exam papers
4. Printing A4 papers

The school goes up to grade 11 (O/L) with 354 students and 16 teachers.

The school is interested in setting up an A/L arts stream if there are at least 10 students interested.

The challenge is that the school is situated in a low income community, where early marriage is common. We need to do better to ensure continued education in a populous community.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Provide biscuits and other foods to Garde 1-5 students
2. Provide night class for O/L students, with food and refreshments included.

Being one of our major schools in the area, we have been helping them for many years now.

During our visit, members of our team gave motivational talks to 3 class cohorts to encourage them in their academic journey and to keep perservering. As suggested by them we agreed to increase the time for the ICT extra classes.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Increase the class time for additional ICT lessons.

Our Team met two teachers from the school who requested help from Abayam.

We met principal alongside our local coordinator.
The school requested us to support/employ a new teacher who could teach both science and maths classes.

We visited this school in a deprived area in the Poonnaruwa District, after hearing about its lack of funding over the past years.

Following our visit, we have decided to start supporting by:

1. Purchasing exercise books, text books, school bags, shoes and chairs.

We have been helping Kandalady Arunthathy Vidayalayam primary school for a number of years. It is a leading school in the area, and during our visit, we met the students, their parents and teachers.

Following their requests over the last visitation, we handed over printing papers.

Following our most recent visit, we have decided to:

1. Provie a smart classroom
2. Consider a model village project.

This is one of our main schools in this area and it is supported by Abayam Women. Like many of our other education project, we have been helping them for a while now.

We have so far, provided O/L exam paper books and pen drives for documenting.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Fund extra teachers if they can generate enough demand for a maths and science A/L stream.

Abayam Women have been helping the school for a number of years now.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Pay the electricity bill
2. Fund sports day

At the Abayam Puthur School, we have 18 pre-school students and 25 evening class students. We provide Araneri classes in conjunction to core education.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Provide necessary furniture
2. Provide a whiteboard
3. Fund sports day
   

At the Abayam Kathiraveli School, we have 7 pre-school students and 23 evening class students. We regularly donate books and provide exercise books, and also funded the recently completed school fencing.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Instal a gate
2. Provide school bags
3. Fund sports day
4. Provide a cupboard
   

We met with the new zonal education director.

Following our visit, we have decided to:

1. Prepare and print question papers to conduct model examination for 957 O/L students in the region from March – April across 10 days.
2. Provide scholarship books for 500 students from low income backgrounds, costing Rs 750 per student.
   

Like most of our education projects, we have been helping this school for several years, supporting 160 students and 12 teachers.

During our most recent visit with met the principals, teachers, pupils and parents and had very constructive discussions regarding the school’s and students’ progress, and Abayam’s long-term support strategy, following signficant benefits felt by the students, staff and parents.

Over the years, we have funded a science lab, which opened in March and celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

We also handed over exercise books and scholarship books.
